Mr. Hutton was educated at Calday Grange Grammar School and Liverpool University. He was awarded the degrees of B.Eng. with first-class honours in 1941 and M.Eng. in 1944.

After training with Tarslag Ltd., he was directed to the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1942.

In 1945 he was sent out to investigate German aerodynamic research methods, and after returning to England in 1946 he became lecturer in fluid mechanics, Civil Engineering Department, City and Guilds College (Imperial College).

He joined the staff of the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, in 1949, and was sent to the Federal School of Technology, Zurich, to undertake research and to study Swiss hydraulic practice in 1951.

He is now a principal scientific officer in the Fluid Mechanics Division of M.E.R.L. East Kilbride.
