The SS Elderslie was named after a North Otago sheep station

She was custom-built in Jarrow [1] for the frozen meat trade from New Zealand to the UK, the first steamer specifically built to carry refrigerated meat to the UK. The refrigeration equipment was built by J. and E. Hall.
