1825 Listed as a manufacturing chemist in Baines Directory, at 20 Cupid's Alley.

Cupid's Alley (later renamed Atkinson Street) was a side street off Deansgate, and had a mix of houses and commercial premises.

Adshead's 1851 Maps of Manchester show Thompstone's Chemical Works on the north side of the alley, on a site measuring 60 ft by 30ft. Immediately adjacent to the east were Hampson's Hat Factory and Ashley's Silk Mill.

The 1849 O.S. map shows the premises as a Soda Water Manufactory.
