School of Gunnery at Shoeburyness
1849 Land for an artillery range at Shoeburyness was first acquired by the Board of Ordnance
1855 Further land was acquired.
1859 A School of Gunnery was established with both instructional and experimental functions.
Annual visits were carried out by Sir John Adye, Surveyor-General of Ordnance, to the School of Gunnery; reports were published in The Engineer. Read the 1881 report at The Engineer 1881/07/29.
1905 the experimental function was assigned to a separate Proof and Experimental Establishment responsible for testing conventional weapons.
1907 the Proof and Experimental Establishment became part of the War Office's Research Department.
