Scottish and Newcastle
Scottish and Newcastle claims to trace its roots back to 1777, when its first brewery was founded in Edinburgh by William Younger.
1960 In April, Scottish Brewers and Newcastle Breweries merged to form Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd. After the merger, the wines and spirits businesses were combined but the two brewing centres essentially carried on business as before.
1985, the company was a regional brewer focused on Scotland and the North of England, ranked number five in the UK and selling 6 mhl per annum.
In the 1980s, Scottish and Newcastle began to expand significantly from its home base to become a major international business with beer volumes growing almost tenfold.
By 1995, following the acquisition of Courage, S&N had become the UK’s leading brewer, selling 15 mhl per annum.
Later, Scottish & Newcastle would locate its headquarters in William Younger's Holyrood Abbey Brewery and its production facilities in McEwans, each on opposite sides of Edinburgh, a brewing centre since the monastic breweries of the 12th century.
