Selby Swing Bridge

From Graces Guide

There are three swing bridges in Selby, North Yorkshire.

The first, built in 1792, is claimed to be the first in the world to make widespread use of ball bearings to facilitate opening. The 31 ft span could be opened by in under a minute. The cast iron gear wheels used from 1792 until their removal in 1970 are preserved.[1]

The first movable railway bridge across the Ouse at Selby - a bascule bridge - was completed in 1840. It was replaced by a swing bridge, opened in 1891.
