First railway laid down in China

1876 The line was opened on the 1st July

Soon afterwards the line was purchased by the Chinese Government and torn up by them, the materials being shipped over to the Island of Formosa, where they were allowed to rust away.

Later the line was restored by the Chinese Government and incorporated in the Shanghai network.
