Shannonbridge Swing Bridge

at Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly
This interesting iron swivel bridge has been moved from its original location - the opening span to the eastern end of Shannon Bridge. Erected in 1843 as part of improvements to the Shannon Navigation, allowing vessels to pass between Limerick, Athlone and terminal harbours. It was replaced in the 1980s by the present fixed span.[1]
Designed by Thomas Rhodes, ironwork by J. and R. Mallet of Dublin.
