His great-grandfather, Robert Jones, had been the first to light Pall Mall using gas

His grandfather, Harry Jones, was president of both the Institution of Gas Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers

His father, Frank Jones, was president of various London gas companies.

Engineering Degree at Cambridge

1929 Won the Miller Prize of Inst Civil Engineers for paper on long distance transmission of gas

Articled to Sir George Evetts, consulting gas engineer.

Became deputy chairman of various gas companies.

1949 After nationalisation of the gas industry, became chairman of East Midlands Gas Board

1952 deputy chairman of the Gas Council

1960-71 Chairman of The Gas Council
