1871 Spencer Chapman 23, fundholder, lived in Shoreham with Elener S Chapman 21, Sydney C Chapman 10 Months[2]

1872 Formed the company Squire, Chapman & Co. with William Stevens Squire in premises at North Woolwich Rd, Silvertown, as makers of sulphuric acid[3].

1876 Gained his Master's certificate

1878 Rudolph Messel succeeded Squire as managing director; the firm became Chapman, Messel and Co.

1881 Spencer Chapman 38, chemical manufacturer, lived in Belgrave, with Ellinor S. Chapman 31, Sydney K. Chapman 10, Helene A. B. Chapman 8, Ellinor Audrey Chapman 7[4]

1899 The businesses of Spencer Chapman and Co and Chapman, Messel and Co of Silvertown and 36 Mark lane, London EC, were converted into a company Spencer Chapman and Messel Ltd[5]
