STEPHEN PAGET WALTER VYVYAN LUKE was born in 1845 at the village of Weeting, in Norfolk, and was the only son of the Rev. F. Vyvyan Luke.
He was educated at the Forest School, Walthamstow, and Victoria College, Jersey, and in 1868 was appointed to the Indian Telegraph Department.
He rendered valuable service during the second Afghan War, and in 1880 was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire.
He became director of the construction branch of the Indian Telegraph Service in 1890, and five years later was promoted to be deputy director general of telegraphs.
He represented India at the International Telegraph Conference at Budapest in 1896.
He retired from the Indian Service early in the following year, subsequently becoming a director of the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Co., and of the Calcutta Electric Supply Association, being largely responsible for the building up of the latter concern.
He died at his home near Newbury on the 1st January, 1929, at the age of 83.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1872.
