Sir Summers Hunter (Member), Honorary President of the North Eastern Marine Engineering Co. Ltd and a well-known marine engineer, died on 25th March at his home in Newcastle.
He was educated at Oundle School and, while serving a five-year mixed apprenticeship with four different companies; he took a Diploma course in mechanical engineering at King's College, Durham University.
During the 1914-18 war he served as a temporary engineer officer in the Royal Navy and became assistant secretary of the Board of Inventions and Research at the Admiralty.
In 1919 he joined the North Eastern Marine Engineering Co. Ltd as an assistant to his father, was appointed a director in 1921 and seven years later became managing director. In 1938, when the company amalgamated with several others, he became group managing director. During the 1939-45 war Sir Summers undertook the duties of regional director of merchant shipbuilding and repairs for the North East coast area. He was knighted in 1943. He retired from executive duties in 1955.
Sir Summers was a Justice of the Peace for Wallsend for many years. He was a member of a number of technical societies and a founder member and first chairman of the National Association of Marine Engine-builders. In addition he was a Fellow and Past-President of the North East Coast Instn of Engineers and Shipbuilders, a Vice-President of the Inst. of Marine Engineers and an honorary Vice-President of the Royal Instn of Naval Architects. Marine engineers and all his friends in this Institution will have learned with great regret of his death.
