"SYDNEY SAYER, who spent most of his career in Egypt and the Sudan, was the senior partner of Messrs. Sayer and Colley, Cairo, engineers, and on the death of Mr. Colley in 1916 he became the sole proprietor.
His death occurred in Cairo on 4th January 1951 in his seventy-second year. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Robinson and Company, Kettering, engineers, he successively held positions as engineer on the outdoor staff of Messrs. Pegg and Sons, Leicester, and Messrs. W. H. Allen, Sons and Company, Ltd., Bedford.
He began his connection with Egypt in 1905 when he became engineer to the Um Rus Gold Mining Co. After a visit in the following year to the United States to gain experience with various prominent engineering concerns he took up an appointment with Messrs. W. H. Allen, Sons and Company as their resident engineer in Egypt and the Sudan.
For many years he was actively engaged in those countries on a variety of schemes, both mechanical and electrical. They included the installation of machinery at the Um Rus Mines, supply of water and electricity to camps in the 1914-18 war, installation of plant for the generating station at Khartoum, construction of the Port Said drainage mains, air compressor stations for the Cairo main drainage, supply and installation of the majority of the ginning factories in the Sudan, and the erection of a cement factory in the Sudan with a potential output of 50,000 tons per annum. Mr. Sayer was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1908 and transferred to Membership in 1919."
