SYDNEY WILLIAM GAVINE (formerly Small) was born Plymouth on 26th December 1883, and was educated at Devonport High School, and at the Naval and Civil Service College, Devonport.

His engineering training was received under Sir John Jackson at Keyham Dockyard Extension, after which he became assistant engineer at Tanjong Pagar Docks, Singapore, and, later, resident engineer at Peterhead Harbour.

This was followed by appointments at Aden under the Port Trust and at the Gold Coast as engineer-in-charge of the Seccondee Water Works and resident engineer on the Gold Coast Harbour Construction.

He became senior Hydraulic Engineer to the Gold Coast Colony in 1919.

He also made the survey preliminary to the construction of the Cape Coast and Coomassie Water Works, and carried out the investigation work for the hydro-electric scheme at Pral River, and the Kwahoo Plateau in connexion with the Bauxite Commission. He designed and built the Winneba Water Works during 1921-3.

His death took place at Matlock on 1st April 1923, in his fortieth year, from heart failure following an attack of black-water fever, due to the long time he had served abroad.

He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1910.
