Thomas Scott Finlayson (1870-1942)

1870 June 05th. Born at Springburn, Lanark, the son of Henry Finlayson and his wife Elizabeth Scott.

1901 Living at Kinnin Park, Glasgow: Thomas S. Finlayson (age 30 born Glasgow), Locomotive Draughtsman. With his wife Maggie and daughter Elizabeth and son Henry.[1]

1913 Joined London and South Western Railway as Chief Draughtsman at a salary of £350 p.a. [2]

1919 Chief Draughtsman, London and South Western Railway.[3]

1939 Living at 24 Leaside Way, Southampton, Mechanical Engineer (Retired). With Margaret L. Finlayson.[4]

1942 August 09th. Died at 24 Leaside Way, Southampton.

We note with regret the death of Mr. T. S. Finlayson, formerly chief locomotive draughtsman, Southern Railway.

A Scotsman who created the great steam engines of the Southern Railway has died in England. He was Mr. Thomas Scott Finlayson, who went from Glasgow to become chief locomotive draughtsman for the old London and S.W. Railway, and later the Southern Railway. Mr. Finlayson was responsible for the big locomotives of the King Arthur, Lord Nelson and 'Schools' class. In 1937 he retired to Southampton, where he had made his home for many years.
