1726 'London, November 10 ..... His Majesty hath been pleased to grant his Letters Patent to Thomas Benson, late of the County of Durham, but now of Newcastle in Staffordshire, Engineer, for the sole Use of a new Engine invented by him, for grinding of Flint Stone liquid for the Use of Potters, whereby the said Ingredient is most expeditiously done, to the greatest Perfection imaginable, without Dust or Damage to the Workmen employed therein.'[1]
