. . . at the age of fifteen was employed as an assistant to the manager of the Canterbury Gas and Water Company, remaining in that position for three years, gaining experience in all branches connected with the working of gasworks and the manufacture and purification of gas. He then obtained an appointment in London in connection with the Singapore Gas Company . . . he received an appointment as Engineer and Manager of the Georgetown (B.G.) Gas Company, and left this country . .
