THOMAS BLAND GARLAND was born on the 22nd of January, 1819.

In 1845 he went to reside in Valparaiso, where he entered, as a clerk, the service of Myers, Bland and Co, merchants of that city, and subsequently acted for some time as manager of their business. He afterwards became a partner in another Valparaiso mercantile firm, that of Senor Cousino.

In or about the year 1847 Mr. Garland established, on the coast of Bolivia, the first apparatus for the distillation of sea-water on a large scale for domestic and other purposes.....
