1856 'Consumption of Smoke.— Mr. Holmes, formerly a bleacher, at Bolton, but now the occupant of Irwell Bleach Works, Pendleton, near Manchester, has patented an invention for preventing smoke, which is said to be applicable to all existing furnaces of anything like proper construction, without any mechanical additions. The invention consists of a composition formed of lime, salt, and other ingredients, to be used with the common fuel.'[1]
