Thomas Hunter Bryce who was born on 4 March, 1890, died on 15 November, 1966.

Educated at Westgate School, Newcastle, he studied engineering from 1918-19 at King’s College, London, and in 1921 was elected Associate Member. Apart from the first world war years, he was to devote his entire working life to the service of one firm - Messrs L. G. Mouchel & Partners, Consulting Engineers, in whose Newcastle office he gained experience as a pupil in draughtsmanship and design from 1907-12: for a further two years he worked in their offices in London and Birmingham. He was to specialize in the design and construction of reinforced concrete work of all types, particularly bridges and quays.

Throughout World War I he served in France with the Royal Engineers, attaining commissioned rank.In 1918, his last year in France,he advised on reinforced concrete shelters at GHQ.

He returned to the Newcastle office of Mouchel & Partners in 1919, and was made Chief Designer, responsible for the preparation of drawings for tendering and construction-mainly of buildings, river works and reservoirs. Appointed District Engineer in Newcastle in 1924 he became three years later a partner of the firm and Area Executive Engineer, responsible for the design, supervision and administration of all works in the northern counties - Northumberland, Durham, Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire (North Riding), and for certain works in Scotland. Over the years 1927-50 these made an impressive total: reservoirs, with coverings and water towers, for Durham County Water Board, at Burnhope, Westerton, Ferryhill, Trimdon and Pittington; bridges for the Corporations of Newcastle and South Shields and for the County Councils of Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland; quays, docks, coaling berths for the Tyne Improvement Commission, and structural work on power stations at Carlisle, Accrington and Oldham for the British Electricity Authority.

Mr Bryce gave up his partnership with L. G. Mouchel & Partners in 1960, though continuing for a further five years as consultant to the firm. He presented two papers to the Northern Counties Association, which he represented on the Council from November 1960 to November 1963. He was also a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Elected an Associate Member in 1921, he became a Member in 1950. He is survived by his widow and one daughter.
