1896 'Mr. Thomas Kane....is the head of the firm of Messrs. Thomas Kane and Co., one of the oldest and most reliable concerns in the States. Mr. Kane is a gentleman of some sixty years of age, and has attained his great success by buying new inventions, and manufacturing as well as disposing of patent rights. He is the owner of many factories, and is esteemed as being one of the most able and leading citizens of Chicago. In the engine department of his business he has manufactured both gas and oil engines, extending back for a period of ten years. He has probably sold as many engines in the States as any one American manufacturer.'[1]
