1879 Obituary.[1]
General regret will be felt at the loss the city and county has sustained by the sudden death of Mr. Thomas Marling. J.P., who passed away suddenly at his residence, Wotton, at about eleven o'clock this morning. Up to between nine and ten o'clock yesterday Mr. Marling was in his usual health, and partook of a hearty dinner, previous to which he had been engaged transplanting shrubs and otherwise tending his garden. Until yesterday Mr. Marling had not required the professional services of his usual medical attendant. Mr. R. W. Graves, for about two years; but, between nine and ten o'clock last evening, he was seized with sickness and faintness, and Mr. Graves was sent for and prescribed for him. Mr. Marling passed a restless night, and at six o'clock this morning his condition was such that it was again deemed necessary to call for the assistance of his medical adviser, who attended and to whom Mr. Marling talked, whilst sitting up in bed. No serious symptoms were then apparent, but about 11 o'clock Mr. Marling, who was 76 years of age, passed away suddenly from the failure of the heart's action, induced by weakness.
During his busy and useful life Mr. Marling has filled many public offices of confidence and responsibility. He was a justice of the peace for the county of Gloucester, and frequently attended the sitting of the Gloucester county magistrates at the Shire-hall on Saturday. As chairman of the Gloucester Wagon Company his clear head and sound judgment has done much to secure for that enterprise the satisfactory position in the confidence of its shareholders and the public which it was his pleasing duty to lay before the shareholders at the last annual general meeting, Mr. Marling had been for many years a director of the Gloucestershire Banking Company, and at the time of his death held the office of treasurer to the county to the Infirmary. As one of the Charity Trustees he always took a great interest in the administration of the trusts, and at one time filled the office of president. Mr. Marling has been for many years a director of the Gloucester Gas Company, and in other ways has been variously connected with the commerce and enterprise of the city and county. The deceased gentleman was a Liberal politics, but did not take any active and prominent share in party matters. He was a brother to Mr. S. S. Marling, M.P. for Stroud, who is now staying at his seat on the Wye, near Chepstow, and who was telegraphed for as soon as his brother breathed his last.
