1886 May Day celebrations - procession: 'A special part of the leading portion of the procession as it passed along Market-street, and which attracted considerable attention, consisted of ten lorries laden with vats and machinery used by brewers from the premises of Messrs. Thomas Ryder & Co., brewers' engineers and coppersmiths, Commercial-St., Knott Mill, Manchester. There were five vats, each capable of holding 2,500 gallons of beer; two copper steam boiling coils, &c., for Mr. John Foster, Swan Brewery, Grey-street, Stockport Road; and also two cast iron pans, each capable of holding 3,500 gallons, and one cast iron square tank in segments, capable of holding 7,000 gallons; one hop press, one improved barrel washer, one malt mill, two copper steam boiling coils, &c., &c, for Messrs. Renshaw & Cardwell, Naval Brewery, Hulme, Manchester.' [1]

1886 Advert: 'THOS. RYDER & CO., ENGINEERS, COPPERSMITHS, BRASS AND IRON FOUNDERS COOPERS, VAT, BECK AND COOLER BUILDERS, KNOTT MILL, MANCHESTER.'[2]

1890 Dissolution of partnership: J. A. Fielding and W. W. Lecomber, Commercial-street, Knott Mill. Manchester, trading as Thomas Ryder and Company, brewers, engineers, [brewers' engineers] and coppersmiths; as regards J. A. Fielding.[3]

This 1946 photo[4] shows Ryder's premises, near the former Galloways Knott Mill Ironworks and the Corporation Yard.

1948 '51 years with the same firm. Mr. Alfred Radcliff, aged 75, of Platt Lane, Rusholme, Manchester,has retired after 51 years' service with Thomas Ryder and Company, Knott Mill, brewery engineers. For 35 years he has been a foreman coppersmith, supervising the making of brewing coppers, measures, and hop backs.'[5]
