Thomas Snowden Butler was born at Kirkstall, near Leeds, on 2nd July 1846, being the second son of Mr. John Octavius Butler of the Kirkstall Forge Co.

After serving his apprenticeship in the shops and drawing offices at those works, he had the management of the engineering department there, during which time he had charge of carrying out the several large and important undertakings executed by the firm.

His death occurred very suddenly from the rupture of a blood vessel on 17th September 1874, in the 29th year of his age.

He became a Graduate of the Institution in 1866.
