1858 Born in Eglingham, Northumberland, son of William Thompson and his wife Jane[1]

1874-1879 Pupil at Messrs Thomas Green and Son, Smithfield Iron Works, Leeds

Started in business on his own account at Seaburn Engine Works, where his clients included the Earl of Durham, the Marquess of Londonderry, and Hetton Collieries.

1881 Living in Bishopwearmouth, William Thompson 64, JP, alderman, chemist, Jane J. Thompson 58, William Thompson 24, engineer, Thomas Thompson 22, engineer, Florence Thompson 17[2]

1882 Sold the business and went to work as an electrical engineer for the Gulshere (?) Electric Light Co, Battersea.

1883 Outside manager for Messrs Thompson, Ritchie and Co, Westminster; then worked at the bench for a marine engine works

1884-8 Went to sea; finishing with the Eastern Telegraph Co as chief engineer of the SS Chiltern.

1889-90 Joined the Sanford Exploring Expedition in the Congo as engineer

1891-92 Worked in the Congo, at sea and at the Thames School of Mines, New Zealand.

1893-94 Chief engineer at a gold mine on the Gold Coast, West Africa

1895 Returned to Britain

1896 Appointed manager of the "Golden Crest" mine in Western Australia

1896 A mining engineer when he became an associate of I Mech E; his address was given c/o his brother Alfred Thompson, M.I.E.E., 20 Bucklersbury, London.

1896 General Manager, Australasian Gold Trust, Lindsay Street, Coolgardie, Western Australia (alternative contact was Alfred Thompson, 20 Bucklersbury, London)
