TOM EDWARD BENNETT BROWN was born at Lyme Regis, Dorset, on 5th February 1863.
His education was received at the Marlborough House School, Weymouth, and at the Noortheig Collegiate School, Cambridge.
In 1878 he began a training of six years in H.M.S. "Marlborough" as an engineer student, and, having passed his examinations, received a commission in the Royal Navy.
This he resigned in 1889 when he became superintendent for Messrs. W. Hill and Co., engineers and contractors, with whom he was employed for ten years.
In May 1900 he became joint managing director of the firm of Ross, Courtney and Co., Ltd., manufacturing engineers, and retained this position until his death, which took place, after a long illness, on 16th June 1913, at the age of fifty.
He was elected an Associate Member of this Institution in 1901.
