"TOM SUTCLIFFE, whose death occurred on 7th March 1947, was in business on his own account as a mechanical engineer throughout his professional career, which dated back to 1892. During this long period he displayed much ingenuity and versatility, and had a number of inventions and patents to his credit, including the Sutcliffe carbonating plant for liquors, and notably the Sutax Sealing machine, which was revolutionary in its method. He also invented a new form of hollow-concrete building block. For some years he was consulting engineer to Messrs. Waone and Company, Ltd., and more recently had acted in an advisory capacity for the South African Breweries in connection with their glass works, which he visited in 1922. He was also actively engaged in the fitting-out of a number of factories engaged in various trades, and his services as an accredited engineering expert were frequently at the disposal of the Royal Courts of Justice. Mr. Sutcliffe received his technical training at various institutes during his apprenticeship, which he served in London with Messrs. Sutcliffe, Austen, and Company. After eighteen months' experience as a turner at the works of Messrs. Maudsley, Son and Field, Ltd., he established his business at Finsbury Pavement. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1919."
