United Transport Co
1937 Company incorporated as a Transport Holding Co, operating as Red and White United Transport Ltd, to consolidate the transport interests built up over 20 years by a group of 6 families.
1949 The passenger transport services were voluntarily sold to the British Transport Commission. Some of the proceeds of the sale were reinvested in various businesses including:
- Bulwark Transport
- Guernsey Railway Co; Guernsey Motors
- Keith and Boyle (London), car dealers
- Lydney Industrial Holdings, with subsidiaries Whitecroft Pin Manufacturing Co and Dendix Brushes
- various transport undertakings in East and Central Africa
1956 British Electric Traction Co (BET) acquired a 20 percent interest in the company which continued with its freight road haulage business (Bulwark Transport Ltd), and also moved into shipping, particularly containers and tank containers.
By 1961 the company also had trade investments in
- Duramin Engineering Co
- United Service Transport Co
- Jamaica Omnibus Services
- Canadian Motorways
1961 Name changed to United Transport Co; shares admitted to trading on the London Stock Exchange.
1971 Some of the subsidiaries were highly profitable, including United Transport Overseas, and Jamaica Omnibus (in both of which BET had a minority interest); United transport also had a minority holding in BET's subsidiary Canadian Motorways[1]. BET increased its interests in United Transport Company to 100%.
