1861 June: The Universal Private Telegraph Company was established by an Act of Parliament but did not become fully operational until 1863. It undertook to construct and maintain lines of private wire between places of business or between residences and businesses[1]. It also purchased certain patents of Charles Wheatstone relating to electric telegraphy[2]

1861 - 1866 Charles Wheatstone was a director and shareholder of Universal Private Telegraph Co[3].

1870 It was one of the c.30 telegraph operating companies taken over by the Post Office
