1927 Associated Breweries Ltd was incorporated to amalgamate 2 Sunderland brewery firms: North-Eastern Breweries Ltd and C. Vaux and Sons Ltd[1]

1939 Associated Breweries Ltd proposed to change from a holding company to an operating company, holding the leases of the licensed premises; the name of the company would be changed to incorporate Vaux[2]

1973 After much expansion the company was renamed Vaux Breweries Ltd

1985 Vaux Breweries plc was renamed Vaux Group plc

By 1994 the business had 3 strands:[3]

  • Brewing and related activities
  • Swallow Hotels, the 6th largest hotel group in the country
  • St. Andrews Homes, builder and operator of care homes
