This vehicle was designed by W. Karmann GmbH and the design work was carried out by Luigi Segre of Ghia in Turin.

The first models went on show in 1955 and it ceased production in 1974. The total production was 444,300.

The car was based upon an amended chassis and standard mechanicals of the VW Beetle.

LHD Coupe introduced May 1955 as model 143.

LHD Convertible introduced August 1957 as model 141.

RHD Coupe introduced August 1959 as model 144.

RHD Convertible introduced August 1959 as model 142.
