1907-38 Secretary of the General Federation of Trade Unions

1940 Died. 'Mr. W. A. Appleton, C.B.E., trade union leader, died on Wednesday Ashwell, at the age of 80. He was secretary of the Lace Makers’ Union from 1896 to 1907, secretary the General Federation of Trade Unions 1907 to 1938, and he had been president of the International Federation of Trade Unions. Mr, Appleton came to Ashwell 17 years ago and during that time had identified himself with many phases of village life. He was several times president of Ashwell Men’s Club and was vice-president at the time of his death; vice-president Ashwell Cricket Club and was a life member of Notts. C.C. Ashwell village museum had his generous support and he was one of the trustees. was a member of the British Legion and the Flower Show and Nursing Association also had his support.'[1]
