Dr. Carlson studied at Witwatersrand University from 1928 until 1931, and served an undergraduate apprenticeship with a number of large South African concerns, followed by a postgraduate apprenticeship with Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd.

In 1935 he joined the Research Department of Babcock and Wilson, Ltd., subsequently becoming section leader in charge of the Mechanical Research Section.

He was appointed development and liaison engineer for the Research Department in 1948, being responsible for co-ordinating development work within the company, and maintaining collaboration with research work proceeding elsewhere.

Dr. Carlson received the degree of D.Sc. in 1950 at the University of Johannesburg.
