W. Rhodes Marriott

From Graces Guide

W. Rhodes Marriott trained as a photographer with the RAF during the war. Originally based in Liverpool he was later posted to Wick, in the far north of Scotland. There he became second in command of a Balloon Ship, and, as a photographer, he developed the film which discovered the German Battleship Tirpitz.

After the war Mr Marriott won a competition for Pepsodent toothpaste, with a family photograph. The £750 prize money enabled him to start his own business, achieving his dream and becoming an Industrial and Commercial Photographer. He joined the Association of the Institute of British Photographers and in 1955 became the President of that Association.

W. Rhodes Marriott’s work took him to many different industrial and manufacturing companies in the North West and he photographed much of the cutting edge manufacturing and technological developments of the time. His studio where he developed many of his own negatives was based in Stockport.

W Rhodes Marriott ran his self employed business from 1953 – 1964.
