They were:

  • Walter Higginbottom 1850-1923 (Walter and George H. Higginbottom were brothers.)
  • George Harry Higginbottom 1852- 1927
  • From 1911, Gilbert Higginbottom 1881- 1916

Walter was born in 1850 in Manchester and George was born in 1852 in Islington, their parents Isaac Higginbottom and his wife Sarah having just moved to London.

Sometime before 1866 the family moved back to Manchester.

Walter was articled to Messrs Walters, Barker and Ellis from 1867 to 1870 and then stayed on as an assistant.

George was articled to E. N. Worthington 1867-1871 and then stayed as an assistant.

1877 The brothers started practising together as W & G Higginbottom. see [1]

At least 4 of their buildings are now Grade II listed:

They had offices at 1 St James’s Square Manchester and then later at 3 Cleveland Buildings, 94 Market Street, Manchester

George also designed some buildings in his own name [9]

In 1911 George’s son Gilbert (b 1881) joined the practice, having previously been articled to his Uncle Walter; he died in 1916.

After the deaths of Walter and George (in 1923 and 1927) the practice was dissolved.
