WALTER HERBERT HANDLEY was associated with the firms of Messrs. R. and J. Dempster, of Manchester, and Messrs. Robert Dempster and Sons, Ltd., of Rose Mount Iron Works, Elland, Yorkshire, from his apprenticeship, which he served from 1892 to 1897, until the time of his death, which occurred on 4th November 1942.
During this period of half a century he was first appointed assistant works manager to Messrs. R. and J. Dempster in 1897. Two years later he went to Elland as works manager, and at the early age of twenty-three was in full control of the works. From 1927 he was joint managing director until 1933 when he became sole managing director.
Mr. Handley was born in Manchester in 1876 and received his education at the Society of Friends School, Penketh, and at Manchester Technical College. He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1930, and was president of the Halifax and District Engineering Employers' Federation in 1932.
