The "Permutit" process consists in treating the water with a chemical combination of alumina and silica with a sodium (or calcium, magnesium, or manganese) base, resulting in an exchange of the sodium base of the Permutit with an equivalent quantity of calcium or magnesium in the water, liberating an equivalent quantity of sodium, which passes forward in solution in the softened water.
