West Calder Co

From Graces Guide

Makers of coal oil, of West Calder near Glasgow

Early 1860s: After the identification of shale as a possible source of oil (regardless of Mr. Young's patent), works at Crofthead were commenced by some members of the West Calder Company, later in the possession of an eminent firm of East and West India merchants. Very soon afterwards the company was provided with complete distilling and refining plant by Messrs Bennie and Co at its new works at West Calder.[1]
