of Art Cabinet Works, Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland. Telephone: Beith 46

1860 The business was reputedly established by Robert Balfour when he moved to Beith from Glasgow. Initially engaged in making chairs, the firm expanded to include a range of furniture and a factory was built in 1872. In 1898 Balfour brought his two sons into partnership.[1]

1865 However, it appears that Balfour was initially a partner in the firm of Balfour and Wallace, cabinet makers, Beith, which was dissolved by mutual consent in this year, after which Balfour continued on his own account.[2]

1908 The West of Scotland Furniture Manufacturing Company Limited was incorporated as a private company, with capital of £25,000, to acquire the business of the West of Scotland Furniture Manufacturing Company, Beith, and of the firm of Robert Balfour and Son, Beith.[3]
