From Graces Guide

1859 Patent Improved Compensator and Releasing Railway Signal was exhibited in model form (described in The Engineer in September 1858); in this the variations in the length of the signalling wires induced by the alternate expansion and contraction due to changes of atmospheric temperature, are compensated by means of a weight, which is self-acting, in place of the usual adjusting screws.
