1924 June 8th. Born in Oldham

Attended Manchester Grammar School

1944 Graduated from UMIST with a first in electrical engineering

1947 Joined English Electric Co

1948 Married Elaine and had a son and daughter

Posted to Spain to manage a railway electrification project

1958 Appointed managing director of EE's Canadian operations

1962 Moved to EE's Liverpool operation and in charge of division of 14,000 persons

1968 Appointed MD of English Electric Computers

1968 Left EE in protest at the decision to merge with GEC

1969 Combined three ball bearing companies to form RHP and was chairman until 1977

1977 Knighted

1977 Appointed chairman and chief executive of the Post Office

Headed up Thorn EMI

1980-1986 Chairman of the Design Council

1984 Appointed executive chairman of BICC

1988 Founder director of Vodafone

1988 President of BEAMA

1991-96 President of the Royal Academy of Engineering

2012 May 19th. Died.
