William Clarke, railway guard, of Leybourne-road, Camden Town, developed a design of brake for railway carriages. Patented in 1858.
The Clarke Brake was a system of chain brakes for railway trains that was tested in the 1875 trials; a modified version was that by Clarke and Webb; another system Clarke developed was the Clarke hydraulic brake[1]
