William Cramp (1807-1879)
William Cramp (1807-1879), American Ship Builder.
1807 Born at Kensington, Pennsylvania.
1861 Cramp was employed by the American Federal Government for his Assisiance in the American Civil War.
1862 Cramp built the Ironside Ironclad, which was used until destroyed in fire in 1866.
1864 The Chattanooga was built and put to service for the Federal Government, although was sunk from ice damage.
1871 Mr Cramp was contracted by the American Steamship Co to build four steamers and the following your in 1872 the SS Ohio, SS Indiana and the SS Illinois where completed.
Since 1873 Cramp went on to build several steamships, working on his 225th vessel before his death in 1879.
