"WILLIAM DEANE BARNES-BRAND, whose death occurred on 30th December 1945, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1903 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1912. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
He was born in 1885 and received his technical education at the Crystal Palace School of Engineering and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. John Mowlem and Company, Ltd., contractors, Westminster, during 1902 and 1903. He continued in the employment of that firm for a further four years as assistant engineer and was engaged upon the reconstruction of Victoria Station. After two years spent in theoretical study he entered the service of the Ceylon Government Railways, but in 1912 he proceeded to Chile to take up an appointment as engineer in charge of a branch line of the Antofagasta and Bolivia Railway. Returning to England in 1915 he served for three years as assistant to the director of inspection for gun ammunition in the London area. Subsequently he went into business on his own account and established the firm of Messrs. Barnes, Brand and Company, Ltd., engineers and machinery merchants, Westminster."
