WILLIAM DRYDEN, Jun.. was managing director of the firm of Messrs. Thomas Dryden and Sons, mechanical and electrical engineers, Preston; his father, the late Mr. William Dryden, Sen., M.I.Mech.E., whom he predeceased by some two months, was for many years the principal. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. J. G. Kincaid and Company, Glasgow, from 1918 to 1923 and during the same period attended the Royal Technical college, where he studied with distinction, obtaining a first-class diploma in mechanical engineer, and a year later, an Associateship.
After a brief period at sea as fifth engineer, he entered the family firm and was made assistant engineer. In 1929 he was appointed technical engineer, and on the conversion of the business into a limited company he joined the board of directors. He became managing director in 1934. Mr. Dryden, whose untimely death occurred on 13th October 1942 at the early age of forty, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1923, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1928 and to Membership in 1936.
