WILLIAM EDWARD HERMANN SCHARINA was born in 1849.

He was a native of Germany and received his early engineering training and experience in various cities on the Continent.

In 1878 he joined the staff of Messrs. Siemens Brothers & Co. at Woolwich ; for three years he was engaged in their telegraph department, and afterwards in the experimental and testing section of their dynamo department.

In 1889 he was transferred to Glasgow, and was entrusted with the general supervision of the firm's contracts in Scotland.

From 1894 to 1906 he acted as manager of the Glasgow branch.

He died on 7th December, 1912.

He was elected a Member of the Institution in January, 1906.
