William Henry Harling

William Henry Harling (1830-1895) of the business W. H. Harling, a leading mathematical instrument maker of the Victorian era. Whilst principally known for his drawing instruments he also produced a range of scientific and surveying instruments.

Born at Hackney the son of Joseph Harling, a Carpenter.

1852 Married at Hackney to Susanna Brett

1861 Residing at Elizor Cottages, Homerton Terrace, Hackney: William Henry Harling (age 31 born Hackney), Drawing Instrument Maker employing 2 men and 2 apprentices. With his wife Susanna Harling, son William James Harling and daughter Emily Julia.[1]

1871 Residing at 9 London Place, Hackney; William H. Harling (age 41 born Hackney), Drawing Instrument Maker. With his wife Susanna, daughter Elizabeth, son William J. Harling (age 15 born Hackney), and daughters Emily and Florence.[2]

1881 Residing at 9 London Place, Hackney; William H. Harling (age 51 born hackney), Drawing Instrument Maker employing 18 Men and 4 Boys. With his wife Susanna and daughters Emily and Florence.[3]

1891 Residing at 170 Richmond Road, Hackney: William Henry Harling (age 61 born Hackney), Drawing Instrument Maker (and employer). With his wife Susanna Harling (age 63 born Guildford).[4]

1895 December 30th. Died, of 112 Downs Park Road, Clapton, hackney. Probate to Susanna Harling, widow.
