WILLIAM JOHN AYRES, who died on the 21st May, 1943, spent nearly his whole life in Brazil. Obtaining an appointment in 1874 with the Brazilian Submarine Telegraph Co., the predecessors of the Western Telegraph Co., he served in turn at Rio Grandi do Sul, Florianopolis, Bahio, Rio and Cera, where he was Manager until 1889. He then resigned from the service of the company, and went to Pernambuco where he spent the rest of his life, founding the firm of W. J. Ayres and Co. in 1901, which in 1937 became Ayres, Son and Co. He was elected a Member of The Institution in 1886.
