Born the son of John Job Atkinson, a railway gatekeeper.

1930 Died. 'Former Inspector of Mines in North, Sir William Nicholas Atkinson, LL.D. who died at Wolverhampton, Saturday, in his year, had been inspector of mines in the Newcastle, Durham. North and South Staffordshire, and South Wales districts and Home Office divisional inspector. He retired in 1917 and was knighted the following year. In 1916 he was awarded the Institute Mining Engineers’.[1]
