WILLIAM PENROSE GREEN was associated with the firm of Messrs. Thomas Green and Son, Ltd., makers of lawn mowers, Smithfield Iron Works, Leeds, for the very long period of sixty-four years. He was born in 1860 and, entering the works as an apprentice in 1877, gained two years experience in the drawing office and became assistant manager in 1882. After four years he was promoted to the position of manager, and in 1891 he was made managing director.
He became chairman of the Company in 1899, and continued to hold this position up to the time of his death which occurred in November 1941. Mr. Green took a keen interest in municipal affairs and was Lord Mayor of the City of Leeds during 1910-11. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1893.
